Do I Miss Touch ID?

Since November, I have been living with the iPhone X. If you haven’t been following along, the iPhone X is the first iPhone without a home button. Since there is no longer a home button, Apple’s fingerprint unlock feature, Touch ID, is also gone.  Because of this, Apple built in facial recognition software to unlock your phone called Face ID.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like solely relying on Face ID because Touch ID was so fast and accurate.  When I first got the iPhone X I also had the iPhone 8 Plus, which still had Touch ID. Comparing the two, there was an obvious speed and accuracy difference between them. The 8 Plus fingerprint reader was significantly faster and easier to use.

There are times where Face ID is annoying and I wish I could have Touch ID back. For instance, when your phone is sitting on a desk or flat surface you cannot unlock your phone unless you hover your head over the top of your phone. I know this might sound insignificant, but it is one of those things you don’t realize you’re missing until it is gone.

If you were not aware, there were two versions of Touch ID. The second version was a great improvement and opened your phone almost too quickly. But after you got used to it, it was fantastic to use over the older generation. My iPad Air 2 still has that first generation Touch ID sensor. It is too slow. In this instance, Face ID has the upper hand. And this is really the comparison we should be doing. Two first-generation products. When you put it in that context, I believe Face ID is leap and bounds ahead of the first-generation Touch ID.

In addition to Face ID, losing the home button gave us some truly great gestures and a new way to use an iPhone, that was very much needed.

To answer my question, yes I do kind of miss Touch ID. But I can only imagine, in two to three years, where Face ID will be. I think we will get to the point where we will look back at Touch ID and laugh.

This fall, from what the rumors are telling us, all the new iPhones may come without a home button. This is the future of the lineup and I look forward to going on this journey with Apple.
